A Question of Substance Submitted by Evelyn Laurence , WUSA Community Blogger Friday, April 8th, 2016, 1:38pm MICHELLE XU Usually it’s the Supreme Court justices who get to ask the tough questions. But every so often, prominent public figures come to Georgetown, and undergraduates glean the rare opportunity to ask questions in return. Last Wednesday, those who attended Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s lecture received an index card where they could write one question for Sotomayor to answer during the standard post-lecture question-and-answer session — a Gaston Hall standard that usually fosters a candid discussion and enriches university programming. In Wednesday’s case, however, the questions were screened and posed by a university official, rather than the student or event attendee who originally wanted an answer. (WUSA9) -- Firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze at the Woodmont Country Club late Thursday night in the bitter cold temperatures. The fire happened around 11 p.m. at a maintenance barn that stored tools, vehicles and other equipment, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer. At least 75 firefighters responded to the blaze. Crews knocked out the bulk of the fire, but hot spots were still an issue. Firefighters were on rotation throughout the night and early morning to keep an eye on the areas that still burned. Piringer said heavy equipment was being brought in to extinguish the fire completely. With temperatures in the teens, firefighters explained how difficult it can be to put fires out quickly. (WUSA9) -- A Silver Spring man who nearly killed two young men near the Rockville Metro Station a little more than a year ago will spend at least the next half-decade behind bars. Reginald Cooper, 39, was sentenced Monday to 60-years in prison, with 50-years before he can even try for parole. Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy told WUSA 9 both victims are Hispanic immigrants who were waiting for a bus on their way to a morning English class in December 2014. The two had never met Cooper before he began cursing at them, according to charging documents. The documents then say Cooper hit one of the victims in the face before stabbing his body with a folding knife, piercing the victim's liver. Cooper attacked the second victim right after and stabbed him in the back. Both men, in their early 20s, were rushed to Suburban Hospital where they were treated for life-threatening injuries. (WUSA9) -- In the fall of 2015, Mark and Yumi Klionsky decided to visit Paris. They coordinated flights and looked for a place to board their toy poodles - Peanut and Pumpkin. A friend recommended Life of Riley. It's a family owned business that describes itself as "boutique pet care"- offering services like doggie daycare, grooming, and doggie hotel suites. "It doesn't look like a kennel. I mean they've got these fancy suites with curtains and fancy cushions," Mark Klionsky said. Ratings on Yelp and Facebook were stellar and the Klionsky saw the majority of reviewers said they loved sending their pets there. The Klionskys say they only had one concern: big dogs. "Peanut is very tiny. She was less than five pounds," Yumi Klionsky said. "She is afraid of big dogs." (WUSA9) -- The all-clear has been given after a hazardous materials investigation in Rockville, Montgomery County authorities say. The chemical that officers detected inside a house in the 1900 block of Valleystream Drive was determined to be insecticide. No other household items or explosives were found inside the house, a fire official said. A source with Montgomery County police told WUSA9 buckets of urine were found inside the house and investigators believe the insecticide was used to get rid of the bugs that came as a result of the urine. When officers opened the door, they were hit with a wave of ammonia and urine smells. Neighbors told WUSA9 the house where officers detected the odor has been foreclosed for months and officers recently arrested several squatters. Nearby residents were ordered to shelter in place while crews investigated the incident.
